Abstract
"The information in this publication is taken from interviews with Dene Elders in northwestern Saskatchewan. Lost for over twenty years, the stories and memories of the people are available at last.
All of the communities represented are in the Upper Churchill River area, an area that is known in the north as "the westside". Although the interviews were done in La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Dillon and Turnor Lake, the memories of the elders reach beyond these communities to talk a life of travel - life in the bush and on the barrens.
As many of these Elders were born at the turn of the century or earlier, their life experience and their shared wisdom goes back many generations. Family stories, legends and history blend with medicine and healing to create an image of life in times past.
Traditional figures like Datsatthi (Crowhead), Copper Woman, and the giant brothers intertwine with one of the most well-known Dene heroes, Thanadelthur. It was she who made peace between the Dene and the Cree and brought the Dene into the fur trade in the early 1700's."--Back cover.
