Abstract

"Charles Bremner, a Scottish Half-breed, was a prosperous farmer and fur trader who settled in the Battleford area near the reserve of Poundmaker, Louis Riel's close ally. During the 1885 uprising, Bremner and his family were taken prisoner by the Indians, and when the army later found him with Poundmaker, they unjustly jailed him for treason. Although Bremner was eventually released, he returned to Battleford to discover that his valuable stock of furs had been taken by General Middleton. Then began the long legal and political battle that led first to Middleton's action being declared "unwarrantable and illegal" and finally to compensation for Bremner.
