Abstract
"Goodbye, Great White Father-Figure—That is a concluding section in the second edition of This Land Was Theirs, and it says much about what kind of book this is.
Here is a book that looks at North American Indian tribes in a very different way. Specifically, it does this in a new first chapter that answers the most common questions asked about American Indians, and in a concluding chapter presents a fresh overview of white policies, treaties, administration, Pan-Indianism, as well as speculation on the future of the North American Indian. Twelve chapters from the core of This Land Was Theirs. Each traces the lifeway of a particular tribe from the time of historic contact to its extinction or present-day customs. Three new chapters give information about additional tribes . . . including a chapter about a major group of Indians in the eastern United States at the present time, the Eastern Cherokee.
The book contains a wealth of new graphic material—kinship diagrams . . . a text map of all major linguistic groupings . . . and a culture area map for each major cluster of tribes, among others. A notable edition is the inclusion of nearly 80 illustrations, many of which are reproduced for the first time anywhere."--Book jacket.
