Abstract
"This volume traces the extraordinary story of the Indian in America, from pre-Columbian times to our own day. Drawing on the most recent conclusions of archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians, Mr. Washburn examines Indian social structures, conduct, and beliefs - separating myth from fact.
Basically, Mr. Washburn views Indian culture and development in three roughly chronological periods: the first when the Indian was on a plane of relative equality with the white man; the second when that equality was challenged and Indian life and culture threatened; and the third, the contemporary era, when a new role for the Indian is in the process of emerging.
In this interdisciplinary history the author, with understanding and compassion, presents the Indian's contribution to the settlement and growth of this country."--Book jacket.
