Abstract
"The history of the Canadian West has been greatly influenced and enriched by the achievements of outstanding Native leaders. Among them was Maskepetoon — Broken Arm — chief of the Rocky Mountain Crees during the turbulent mid-1800s. Injured and abandoned in a buffalo wallow as a baby, Maskepetoon overcame adversity to become a strong and respected chief who took his people from the woodlands out to the open plains to seek the declining herds of buffalo. Although Maskepetoon aided Methodist missionaries and guided settlers through the mountain wilderness, he followed his own path, always acting in the best interests of his people. Warrior and diplomat, he fought like a lion in times of war but sought peace whenever possible, risking and ultimately losing his life in its pursuit. Hugh A. Dempsey draws on years of research and includes valuable insights from contemporary Cree sources in this compelling account of Maskepetoon and his people."--Back cover.
