Abstract
"The purpose of this document is to explore the experience of Hollow Water, a small Aboriginal community, with healing sex offenders using traditional alternatives to mainstream sex offender treatment. The first section examines tradition and change in Ojibwa culture, including relationships with the spirit world, traditional roles of men & women, traditional Ojibwa sexuality, sexual unhealthiness & aberrations, and the impact on Native culture of the European invasion. The second section reviews current treatment approaches with non-Aboriginal sex offenders and their relevance for Aboriginal offenders. It discusses the characteristics of sex offenders, their assessment, and treatment using cognitive behavioural therapy. The third section explains sexual victimization & how initial victimization can be compounded, reviews the effects of sexual abuse victimization on individuals & communities (including the impact of victimization in Hollow Water), and compares healing & victim treatment by western psychiatric systems and the Community Holistic Circle Healing process used in Hollow Water. The final section contains transcripts of experiences of community workers and sexual abuse survivors in Hollow Water."--WorldCat.org.
