Abstract
"Designed to improve the self-image of Canadian Indian secondary students and the cultural awareness of Canadian white urban secondary students, this course syllabus on Canadian Indians and Metis states eight educational objectives and presents three major sections which include specific topics, each with references (books, filmstrips, tapes, etc.), terms to define, and study questions and projects. The following sections and topics are included: (1) The Canadian Indians Prior to the Coming of the Europeans (migration theories: leading into Canada and Saskatchewan; the Canadian Indian tribes; the concept of culture, including cultural universals, enculturation, and cultural dynamics; and Indian cultures of the pre-horse era, including the Plains Indians, the West Coast Indians, the Indians of the Eastern Woodlands, and the Eskimo); (2) European Contact to the Signing of the Treaties (the horse and its effect; the first Europeans--explorers, traders, and missionaries; buffalo hunters; the coming of the settler to the Northwest; the fight for a homeland and a way of life; defeat of the Indian and the Metis); (3) Contemporary Indians and Metis (signing of the treaties; treaty rights; Indian administration; the Indian Act; the contemporary reserve; Indian organizations and leaders; and the so-called Indian problem, an overview)."--WorldCat.org.
