Abstract
"In 1930 two Minneapolis young men - Arnold Eric Sevareid, age seventeen, and Walter C. Port, age nineteen - launched their eighteen-food canvas canoe in the Minnesota River at Fort Snelling to begin the long journey from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. Without benefit of radio or motor for the canoe, and without good maps or background information, they made their way by rivers, lakes, and sixty portages over 2,250 miles. After fourteen weeks, they arrived at York Factory on Hudson Bay, just before winter freeze up. Canoeing with the Cree is Sevareid's unpretentious account of their odyssey. With the passage of time, the book has also become a historical record describing a land exhilarating in its vastness and frightening in its remoteness. Sevareid's book, first published in 1935, was based on a diary kept on the trip and on a series of newspaper stories written en route. The articles helped Sevareid get hired as a copy boy on the Minneapolis Journal and inaugurated his distinguished career in journalism and television newscasting."--Back cover.
