Abstract
"Now in paperback for the first time, Commonsense Cataloging is a concise, practical explanation of cataloging techniques that can be used in any collection, general or specialized. Long regarded as the standard handbook for the practicing librarian and library student since the appearance of the first edition in 1965, this classic professional reference book, equally useful to the student or the experienced librarian who needs to keep up-to-date with current practice, has been revised to provide an overview of cataloging in the 1990s. The authors, both experienced teachers of cataloging, take into account new media, analyze typical cataloging problems, explain the changes brought about by the revised edition of AACR2, and offer guidance on how to standardize for automation.

The inexperienced cataloger is given clear explanations of all stages in the cataloging process, from designing an entry and choosing access points to cataloging the new technologies. Each chapter concludes with a summary of concepts and terms introduced in the preceding pages, and a glossary and index are also provided."--Back cover.
