Abstract
"Herbert C. Kraft's long-awaited book is the first full-length study of the archaeology, history, and ethnography of the Lenape or Delaware Indians, their Munsee-speaking kinsmen, and the prehistoric forbears of both. From about 10,000 B.C. they dwelled in Lenapehoking (or "Land of the Lenape"), which included what is now New Jersey as well as southeastern New York State, western Long Island, eastern Pennsylvannia, and northern Delaware. Local place names such as Manhattan, Passaic, and Hackensack are all that remain of them in the area today, except for excavated artifacts.

The author traces the Lenape Indians from their beginnings to their survival today in Oklahoma and other western states and Canada. Archaeological and historical research has permitted the author to examine the lives and material culture of the Lenape Indians over a vast span of time, as they adapted to changing environmental conditions and new peoples. From the first appearance of the Paleo-Indian hunters and gatherers to the settled farmers who were driven from their lands by encroaching European settlers, The Lenape is the story of cultural adaptation and survival in the face of fearsome odds. What emerges is a historical reconstruction of the Lenape Indians, without the colorful local legends and frequent misinformation that has often marred previous work on the subject.

Kraft has been professor of anthropology and director of the Archaeological Research Center and Museum at Seton Hall University since 1960. He has degrees in both anthropology and history and has served as president of the Eastern States Archaeological Federation and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey. Kraft has conducted archaeological excavations in the upper Delaware River and Musconetcong valleys since 1964 and has worked with many descendants of the Lenape Indians living in New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Canada."--Book jacket.
