Abstract
"Studies of the Beothuk culture show them to have been a peaceful people, ill equipped to ward off the aggressions of the new settlers to the island. Some two hundred and thirty years after the arrival of the first Europeans in Newfoundland, the last of the Beothuks died. While little notice was taken of their situation at the time, then-Lieutenant George Christopher Pulling attempted to bring attention to their plight. His reports to the governing powers were ignored. Marshall's book includes the recently discovered reports that Pulling wrote in 1792, and discusses the relations between the Beothuk and the settlers.

Ingebord Marshall has studied with great interest the Beothuk of Newfoundland since becoming a resident of this province twenty years ago. In 1984 she received a Master of Anthropology at Memorial University. Her masters thesis, Beothuk Bark Canoes: An Analysis and Comparative Study, was published by the National Museum in Ottawa. Her research on the Beothuk has included archaeological surveys of various camps and burial sites in the Notre Dame Bay area and systematic searches of archives in Canada and abroad for previously uncovered documents on Newfoundland's native Indian. In her present position as Research Associate with the Institute of Social and Economic Research at Memorial University of Newfoundland she is able to continue her studies in this field."--Back cover.
