Abstract
"Frances Fraser was born and raised close to the Blackfoot Reserve in southern Alberta. As a child she was given the name Sokosinik-sinaki, meaning Good Singing Woman, and she maintained close connections throughout her life with the Blackfoot people who were her friends and neighbours. Urged by some elders of the tribe to record the legends they told her, Fraser turned out to be an accomplished story-teller in her own right. This volume of her work brings together her two earlier collections, The Bear Who Stole the Chinook and Other Stories and The Wind along the River.

These are tales of courage and cowardice, wisdom and foolishness, kindness and cruelty; their characters are women and men, birds, animals, stars and ghost-riders. There are love stories - a warrior brings his beloved back from the land of the dead, a young woman marries a star - and chronicles of personal battles as well as those fought on a grander scale. Central to the book are the adventures of the famous trickster-creator Na'pe (the Old Man), as he makes his way through Blackfoot country.

Frances Fraser's translations from the Blackfoot are vivid and poetic, and they have a simplicity, wit and dramatic flair that capture the spirit of the original versions. Written to be read aloud, these marvellous tales will be enjoyed by readers of all ages and backgrounds."--Back cover.
