Abstract
"The Lipan Apaches are one of the most important tribal groups in Texas history. Originally settled in the Texas Panhandle, in the eighteenth century they were driven by the Comanches into the Hill Country where they came into contact with the Spaniards.

Thomas F. Schilz describes the tribe's precarious final years in The Lipan Apaches in Texas, No. 83 in the Southwestern Studies Series.

After Texas attained statehood, U.S. officials proposed settling the Lipans on a reservation among tribes that had been their traditional enemies. The Lipans responded by moving to Mexico and joining the Comanches in raids on frontier villages. In 1873 the U.S. Army sent soldiers into Mexico where they attacked the Indian villages and took prisoners. The Lipans who remained joined the Mescalero Apaches in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico.

This is the first comprehensive study of this Apache group."--Back of cover.
