Abstract
"The original "red Indians," the Beothucks of Newfoundland, called "red man" from their custom of painting their bodies with red ochre, were a fascinating and noble tribe whose legends died with them in the nineteenth century. In this book author Paul O'Neill constructs, in a simple and elegant style, the form that some of their folk tales might have taken, based on all the known facts about the tribe, including the information given by the last Beothuck, a women who died in 1829. In presenting these mythic tales of the stars, the seas, the rivers, thunder, lightning, fire, snow and other elements of the natural world, Legends of a Lost Tribe also presents a vivid, colourful portrait of this mysterious and vanished people.

Paul O'Neill is a poet, broadcaster, columnist, historian and author. Born in Newfoundland, he has travelled throughout the world, ultimately returning to the island province, where he continues to pursue his varied interests."--Back cover.
