Abstract
The canoes of the Hurons waited at The Narrows. They were ready to take the warpath against the Iroquois, and the man who was to lead the attack had arrived - Champlain, the Great Chief with the Iron Breast.

Of all the Hurons, young Gros-Louis had the most interest in the Great Chief. With his father, he had built a gift for Champlain, a truly beautiful war-canoe. And although Gros-Louis was too small to fight, he hoped this great canoe would take Champlain to victory over the Iroquois.

"Wait until the maple leaf turns red before you attack the Iroquois," warned Hudaju, the medicine-man. But the Hurons were in ther war-paint, eager for battle, and they set out at once. Only Gros-Louis and his sister Ronateka listened to Hudaju, and they were sure that Champlain, the Great Chief, was in danger and needed help.

Here is the story of how young Gros-Louis helped Champlain, and how the great canoe helped as well, though in an unexpected way.
