Abstract
"The twenty-two tales presented here are those of a group of Inuit known as the Copper Eskimos, a people who have for centuries occupied a harsh and forbidding land along the Canadian Arctic coast. This delightful collection of their traditional legends and fables reveals a view of man, nature and the supernatural very much influenced by the realities of a life style bound to that land.
The transmission of these legends has been until now a purely oral exchange. It was during the long winter nights that people gathered in the igloos; the old storyteller, "his face," suggests Al Purdy, "shining like a television set," passed on his stories to a younger generation, without the help of the written word.
Whether light-hearted and humorous or suspense-filled and dramatic, such legends offered the listener answers to the mysterious of his own world; to that legacy we may add an intriguing glimpse into the culture of Canada's Eskimos."--Back cover.
