Abstract
"The writings of Grey Owl - blood-brother of the Ojibway, naturalist, and storyteller - have delighted readers world-wide since they first appeared. The Men of the Last Frontier was his first book, published in 1931.
By the 1920s, Grey Owl could see Canada's outposts of adventure being pushed farther north, to the very edge of the wilderness. Increasing numbers of lumbermen, miners, and trappers had invaded the old solitudes to seize Nature's wealth with relentless efficiency.
Grey Owl sounded the alarm as valleys he regarded as his own were desecrated with sawmills, "his" hills were blasted for hidden wealth, and "his" beloved beavers were exterminated by trappers out for a quick fortune. He wrote his stories of life on the trail, and tales of his Indian friends and animal companions, to arouse interest in conservation.
Threats to the environment are even greater now than in Grey Owl's day, and The Men of the Last Frontier is a timely reminder of the richness of our heritage and our land."--Back cover, 1989 reprint.
