Abstract
"Fred Stevens was a rebellious man, quickly angered by injustice, and honest to the brink of disaster, and during his lifetime his achievements went unrecognized except by the simple people he went unrecognized except by the simple people he served for fifty-two years. Only now, when an honest public effort is being made to establish the Indian in the economy and society of Canadian life, is the pioneer work accomplished by men and women of Fred and Frances Stevens' calibre commanding appreciation and rightful respect. Any frustration and disappointment Dr. Stevens suffered he attributed to his inability to interest the proper authorities in the vital need for promoting social, educational, religious and healthful progress among the neglected Indians he discovered in 1897."--Introduction.
