Abstract
"This book is intended not only to furnish the layman or student with the means for identifying the native trees and shrubs throughout the United States, but to demonstrate certain truths relative to form and color which are more within the province of the artist than the botanist and which naturally do not appear in textbooks or botany.

The author spent a lifetime on the study of natural history, and artistic and scientific accuracy characterize all his work.

The nomenclature is that of Engler and Prantle, and the scientific names conform to identification of species by the leaves and by the character of the bark. Forty-four pages of maps showing the distribution of trees and treelike shrubs throughout the United States.

Recommended as especially helpful by the American Association for the Advancement of Science."--Book jacket.
