Abstract
"This work is an examination of the operation of the kinship system of the Mission Chipewyan. It examines the utilization of kinship terms by this group of Caribou-Eater Chipewyan and the conflict inherent within their system. The sources of conflict are derived from the Chipewyan utilization of both relative age and genealogical position as a means of categorizing kin as well as the overlap in functions of the kindred and the hunting unit. Analysis of marriage and the role of affines is included and the non-age-ranked ties between siblings-in-law are shown to be crucial to group formation in this society."--page iii.
