Abstract
"Sabin in his great work on books concerning America states: "Almost a cyclopaedia of material relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention or record of the gentleman who accompanied the expedition; and their statements respecting the Sioux and Chipeway tribes are among the most valuable we have."
William Hypolitus Keating was a highly unusual man for the early frontier. He was successful as a lawyer, an editor, businessman and scientist. He was professor of minerology and Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, and acted as geologist and historian of Major Stephen H. Long's Second Expedition. He served in the Pennsylvania Legislature and became one of the founders of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad.
This book is the full record of Long's Second Expedition, certainly a prime source of historical information on the early exploration and Indian activity in the upper mid-west."--Book jacket.
