Abstract
"Ten year old Samson Beaver did not like the white man's school. The things the school taught seemed to be of little use to a hunter, and Samson wanted to grow up to be like his father, a hunting chief of the Stoney Indians. Since his father had sent him to the school, Samson tried to like it. He tried his best for a month — and then he was so homesick he just had to run away.

Alone, he set out on his pony to track his father's band across 400 miles of mountain country following a track left by a split hoof. He had to live off the country, on berries and fish. It was October and cold and snowy.

It took Samson a month to find his family. Along the way he had many adventures: unusual, interesting, and even dangerous. Young readers will find it exciting to follow him on the trail and discover with Samson new things about the outdoors.

A true story of the Canadian West 80 years ago."--Book jacket.
