Abstract
"This exhibition of American Indian Art is the first comprehensive presentation, devoted entirely to material of the pre-1850 period. The exhibition includes more than 300 objects which encompasses a time span of nearly 200 years, with some dating as early as 1650. The tribal origin is equally inclusive with material from such diverse peoples as the Tlingit of the Northwest Coast, the Seminoles of Florida, the Iroquois of New York and the nomadic tribes of the Plains. In fact only the tribes of the Southwest and California are not included for the simple reason that no early ethnological collections have survived from these areas."--Introduction.
