Abstract
"Many tribes, including the Nova Scotia Micmacs (from whom author Evelyn Eaton claimed descent) view crows and ravens as "little black messengers of the Great Spirit or Author of Mankind." This book about celebrated American Indian writer Evelyn Eaton is her daughter's "flight with crows over remembered terrain, lighting down now and then on weatherbeaten signposts to reflect as best as I can the extraordinary and lasting impact my mother and her teachings had . . . and particularly the memories I have in the final months of her journey of sorrow, mirth, celebrations, wisdom, and even a secret or two that perhaps could now be shared." To some, Evelyn Eaton was known as Grandmother, to others as prolific writer, poet, world traveler, lecturer, and teacher. At age eight, she published her first poem in the Montreal Star. She became an American citizen in 1944 and served as war correspondent. She taught at Columbia University, Mary Washington University, Sweet Briar College, Ohio State, Pershing College, and Deep Spring College. She first encountered Paiute and Arapaho medicine people in 1962. She subsequently immersed herself in study of Native American spiritual traditions. Her many books include Snowy Earth Comes Gliding, I Send a Voice, The Shaman and the Medicine Wheel, Go Ask the River, and The Trees and the Fields Went the Other Way. Many of her books consider the Native American spiritual view of life and holistic healing. Evelyn Eaton's Indian name, after all, means Hands-Show-Way. Indeed, she is considered a bridge between western and Native American cultures, a mystic with a keen sense of humor."--Back cover.
