Abstract
"Most Canadians know surprisingly little about the stories and songs of our aboriginal people. Almost everyone has seen Eskimo carvings and most of us are familiar with the graphics of such artists as Pitseolak and Carl Ray. But though anthropologists have been studying the oral traditions of these people for almost a century, very little is known about their work, most of which is buried in learned journals. We have already published two pioneering collections of aboriginal poetry, edited for the layman by John Robert Colombo. Both sold out within a few months. In Songs of the Great Land, Colombo has selected the most vivid and telling stories and songs from the rich and varied literature of Canada's first peoples. Recorded live in the field, translated into English and now published in a convenient, attractive format, these songs reveal the Indian and Eskimo people for the first time as they really were."--Book jacket.
