Abstract
"A well known collection of Indian Legends is now reissued in a new format for the delight of the youngsters today. The astonishing vitality of these stories stems from their authenticity. Originally published in 1895, they were taken from material collected during the 1870's and 1880's by government researchers, at a time before many of the tribes were confined to reservations.

Here are the tales told by Indian storytellers whose camps and villages could be found from the Pacific coast to the Midwest prairies and the New England hills. They tell of giants and ghost spirits, of feats of bravery, of cleverness and magic. Appealing strongly to the imagination, they also reveal the beliefs and way of life of the American Indian.

Lorence F. Bjorklund, noted for his drawings of Indians and the American frontier life, has added a meaningful introduction as well as the handsome illustrations."--Front flap.
