Abstract
"There are not many great collections of the arts of the Northwest Coast Indian, either public or private. These few are large; and this may be the reason why not one of them has been published in the form of an illustrated, comprehensive, catalogue analyzing the objects as works of art and as products of a particular milieu which was their matrix. This book by Erna Gunter, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington, is the first to be based on one such major collection. Using her own extensive knowledge of the art of these cultures, the material in the Rasmussen Collection, and the notes of Axel Rasmussen, the collector, she has produced a unique work." -- page vii.
