Abstract
"For a number of years, faculty in the Department of Indigenous Studies have wanted to develop a textbook that would better meet the needs of students in introductory courses. A prospectus was prepared to examine existing textbooks in the field, identifying their strengths and weaknesses. Based on this analysis, the process of writing a new textbook began.

Survival of a People corresponds to the content of Indigenous Studies 100. It includes an introduction to diverse First Nation cultures throughout Canada, and then proceeds to cover the history of First Nation—European contact up until the end of the negotiations of the Numbered Treaties, circa 1923. The text surveys the field of Indigenous Studies generally and then focuses more specifically on a sampling of the distinct cultures of Indigenous peoples throughout Canada. Students, therefore, learn how Indigenous people's lifestyles and beliefs were influenced by close pre-colonial connections to the land on which they were born, lived and hunted."--Preface.
