Abstract
Western theory and practice are over-represented in child welfare services for Indigenous Peoples. ohpikinâwasowin/Growing a Child: Implementing Indigenous Ways of Knowing with Indigenous Families was written for people interested in learning about the iyiniw (First Peoples, people of the land) universe and how to integrate that knowledge to support iyiniw families whose lives are affected by child welfare. Child welfare for Indigenous Peoples must be informed and guided by Indigenous practices and understandings. Privileging the iyiniw universe leads to reinvigorating traditional knowledges, practices and ceremonies related to children and families that have existed for centuries.
The chapters of this book describe wisdom-seeking journeys and service-provision changes that occurred in Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8 Territories on Turtle Island. Many of the teachings are nehiyaw (Cree), and some are from the Blackfoot and Métis Peoples. Taken together, the chapters follow the Turtle Lodge Teachings, which express the stages of human development from the nehiyaw perspective. The collection offers decolonized alternatives for Canada's current child welfare system."--Back cover.
