Abstract
"The day-to-day life of the fur trader during the late 18th and early 19th centuries is captured in the pages of this corrected reprint. Long out of print and difficult to obtain, this useful book contains the authentic journals of five fur traders — including the famous narrative of Peter Pond which is presented in a completely new transcription made from the original manuscript now in the possession of Yale University. A new foreword by Minnesota's eminent historian, Theodore C. Blegen, gives greater dimension to the reprinted edition by placing it against the background of research and fur-trade scholarship since 1933 when the book was first published. A new index has been added.

The other four diaries included are those of John Macdonell, who describes with care his first trip over the fur-trade route through the Great Lakes and the Minnesota-Ontario border lakes to the region of Lake Winnipeg; Archibald N. McLeod, whose journal tells of wintering at Fort Alexandria on the Assiniboine River; Hugh Faries, who writes of life at the North West Company's fort on the Rainy River; and Thomas Connor, who established a trading post in the St. Croix River country near present-day Pine City, Minnesota. These documents offer dramatic, first-hand glimpses of the daily existence of voyageurs and Indians, detailed data on canoeing, trading practices, trade goods, Indian customs, and a host of other topics."--Book jacket.
