Abstract
"A marriage of fine artwork and poetically rendered text to portray specific incidents is often a challenging task. The many ceremonial dances herein portrayed have more than met this challenge.

In his medium Ira Moskowitz has displayed a rare sensitivity to both line and form. He provides a rich aesthetic sense in every lithograph, sketch, and drawing. Yet the simplicity and the directness with which he reaches the core of his subjects attests to his reputation as one of our leading artists.

John Collier's probing text enlightens the reader and moves him to a broader comprehension of the Indian tribal way of life and ceremonial rites. His total familiarity with and sympathy for their problems, providing valuable insights into the current situation, result from his long association with the Indians.

Included among the many sketches and lithographs are scenes depicting the Santo Domingo Corn Dance, the Harvest Dance at San Pueblo, the Deer and Turtle Dances at Taos Pueblo, the Great Night Change (Yeibichai) of the Navajos, the Eagle and Snake Dances of the Hopis, the Mescalero Apache Dance of the Mountain Spirit, and many others. In addition we are given first-hand accounts and explanations of the Shalako Ceremony at Zuni Pueblo, the rite of the Blessing Way as practiced by the Navajos, the sacred and symbolic dramas of pueblo life, plus many other insights into the healing ceremonies of the various tribes.

In brief this book documents the range of Southwestern Indian religious and ritualistic patterns for living. Together with John Sloan's incisive introduction, it will serve as an invaluable achievement to be shared by anyone who appreciates the beauty of the forms and customs that make up the Indian's concept both of his life and of himself."--Book jacket.
