Abstract
Paul Whitebear is a nine-year-old Native boy who lives with his Mom, Dad, brother, and sister in an average neighbourhood in Calgary, Alberta. Paul enjoys the same activities, goes to the same type of school, and has the same kinds of problems as most nine-year-old children in Canada, but he has a genuine interest in his Native Ojibway heritage. He has a close relationship with his Uncle Joe, a construction worker who dances Pow Wow. Uncle Joe's love of traditional dancing keeps him close to his Native roots. The two other people Paul is very close to are his grandfather and grandmother, whom he calls Moushum (Grandfather) and Kookum (Grandmoter). Moushum and Kookum still live on their reserve in Southern Saskatchewan.

Known to his family by his nickname Macous (Little Bear), Paul learns and lives his Native heritage through the storytelling and experiences shared with his Uncle Joe, Moushum, Kookum, and his parents.

In "The Sacred Eagle Feather," Macous visits his Moushum and learns about the significance of eagle feathers in Native tradition. In this, the first book published in the Macous Knows series, Charlene Crowe and Bruce Starlight have managed to combine a compelling story line with an important cultural lesson for young Native children. Beautifully illustrated by Carrie Ann Page, the book is a must for anyone wanting to become more aware of Native culture and tradition."--Back cover.
