Abstract
"This book captures in text and picture the vanishing arts and handicrafts of the Indians of North America, from Florida to Alaska. Drawing on many scattered sources, the author presents the distinctive skills of the various tribes in creating the necessities of daily life as well as painting, music, and other art forms. Explicit instructions enable the reader to produce decorative and utilitarian objects through the processes employed by the Iroquois, Chippewa, Hopi, Navaho, and many other tribes. Filled with observations on tribal life and customs — both historic and present-day — the book reflects the author's years of study of American Indian culture. Many of the excellent drawings were executed by the author's late husband, Ernest Thompson Seton, who sketched the craft processes from life. Bibliographies and suggested readings for each chapter provide an exhaustive key to the original literature."--Book jacket.
