Abstract
"Interpretive Contexts for Traditional and Modern Coast Tsimshian Feasts is a description of the feast tradition of the Coast Tsimshian people based on fieldwork in Hartley Bay, British Columbia and on material from archival sources and previously published accounts. The volume includes a discussion of the cultural meanings of the traditional feast complex, a brief summary of feasting patterns at Hartley Bay over the last fifty years from information from current texts, archives and community elders, and a description of current feasts. Both the traditional and modern feasts are viewed primarily as forms of discourse, shaped by textual conventions that are specifically Tsimshian."--page iii.
