Abstract
"This book is a study of continuity and change in a Northwest Coast fishing community which has been formally incorporated into Canadian society and is administered under the Indian Act. Although the Haidas have been absorbed into the political and economic institutions of the dominant society, they have preserved a flourishing ceremonial life patterned on the old matrilineal model and supporting a modified version of traditional values.

This continuity is possible because the people continue to inhabit their ancestral sites, carrying out traditional subsistence activities. At the same time, their old authority system deprived the Haidas of control of their own affairs. Their access to resources they formerly owned has been restricted, forcing them to seek wage labor and "government handouts.""--Back cover.
