Abstract
"A fascinating collection of North American Indian myths and legends, presented within the contexts of world folklore. The themes are universal — the mystery of creation, the reason for the changing seasons, the world beyond death, the struggle of good and evil, and man's place in nature. The author relates the Indian tales to the Greek myths and the Biblical stories, and points up similarities and differences to provide a basis for comparison of Indian myths and legends with the folklore of different ages and different cultures. Legends concerned with physical features of our country — "Hinun, the Giant of Niagara Falls" and "The Sleeping Giant" (of Thunder Bay), for example — are of particular interest. Young people will see the elements of some of these tales occur in the space-age fantasies of our contemporary society, and that some tales have been related to scientific discoveries. In addition to its strong narrative appeal, the book is interesting for its depiction of the Indian character, in that it stresses the qualities of courage and unselfishness, which are important in the Indian moral code."--Book jacket.
