Abstract
"Dartmouth College was founded by Eleazar Wheelock, who undertook a gigantic task when he attempted to educate American Indians and through them Christianize other Indians in the Colonies. Wheelock writes, "None know, nor can any, without Experience, well conceive of, the Difficulty of Educating an Indian. They would soon kill themselves with Eating and Sloth, if constant care were not exercised for them at least the first year. . . ." The story of these difficulties is suggested in this volume' the results of this care are wholly evident in the letters written by the Indians when they had left the confining influence of Wheetlock's school. Professor McCallum has interestingly enough allowed the Indian to speak for himself in these letters . . . to confess his sins, carry on his courtships and express his religious convictions." -- Book jacket.
