Abstract
"This study is concerned with the adaptation of Indian crafts to an expanding White market. The disappearance of aboriginal woven basketry and the adoption and diffusion of woodsplint basketry reflect the changing socio-economic environment of the Indian communities in northeastern North America. An analysis of the decorative patterns on these two types of basketry reveals the tenacious survival of basic artistic concepts of aboriginal origin. With this study an effort is made to demonstrate the ethnohistorical value of museum collections."--page ii.
