Abstract
"This thesis is based on research carried out by the author on tipi rings at EdOp-1, the British Block Cairn Site, in southeastern Alberta. The first component of this research involves modeling the relationship between the tipi and the tipi ring using primarily ethnographic data. The model observations are then compared to the tipi rings from EdOp-1. Finally, spatially close tipi rings are compared and contrasted using a set of variables defined within the study in order to demonstrate whether or not different tipi ring occupations can be detected through differences in tipi ring construction.

The study demonstrates that the tipi required a considerable investment of raw materials, and as a result, the tipi ring is a product of a carefully reasoned decision on the correct anchoring strategy for a given environmental setting. The study also demonstrates that differences between spatially unrelated tipi rings exist, but it is recognized that the model and this application requires additional refinement."--page vi.
