Abstract
"Scramble is an action-packed word-building game designed to support Indigenous Languages throughout Northern Canada — both in the home and at school. The Scramble game had its origins in Fort Smith, NWT where the local high school Chipewyan language teacher and his students developed the game to support classroom language instruction. The South Slave Divisional Education Council funded the production of this first game and it generated excitement throughout the region. Many students, parents and teachers asked for game boards to support their personal language goals.
This version of the game is an expanded version designed for play in seven different Indigenous Languages — Dëné Dédliné Yatıé / Dëné Sųłıné Yatıé (Chipewyan), Bush Cree, Dene Zhatié / Dene Yatié, Tłı̨chǫ Yatıį́, Sahtúot’ınę Yatį́ (North Slavey), Dınjıı Zhı' Gınjık (Gwich'ın) and Inuvialuktun.
The title of this game has been translated into these seven languages. In some languages, the title translates as Word Game or Making Words but, interestingly enough, in Dene Zhatié, the title translates as ...to frantically search through the many letter cards in order to put letters together to make words, phrases and even sentences in their language."--Rules sheet.
